Brown quilt made of dyed fabric squares

E(13)ARTH takes its name from a postcode: Plaistow, the location of the garden where many of its dye materials were grown, and the kitchen where others were prepared.

The cloth itself came from elsewhere. Worn cotton pillowcases given to me over the years by my parents, separately and without coordination, passing on what they no longer needed. I dyed them using nettles, rhubarb and iron from the garden, and avocado skins and onion skin from the kitchen.

The result is a quilt that is simultaneously very local and very intimate, rooted in a single postcode, made from the residue of three households and their relationships, carrying the colour of what we grew and cooked and wore out. A personal and portable artefact of home.
